When Zürich’s first permanent theatre building, the 1834 Aktientheater, burnt down, the Zürich Opera House was built in 1891. Used for both theatre and music, it was known as the Stadttheater. In 1926 it was renamed the Opernhaus, following completion of a new theatre, as it focused on opera, operetta and ballet. Close to Lake Zürich, it was designed by the Viennese architects Fellner and Helme. The neo-baroque building seats about 1,200 and is founded on 1,800 oak piles. Renovated and extended between 1982 and 1984, the ornate opera house exhibits many busts, including those of Mozart, Wagner, Shakespeare and Goethe.
