The Zürich Central Library, which is also the main library of the University of Zürich, is located next to the Predigerkirche and built on the former Dominican monastery site. Although founded in 1914 by a merger of the former cantonal and city libraries, its history really goes back to the 13th century Grossmünster Abbey, much of whose library was lost in the Swiss Reformation. The library today has some 3.9 million books, 124,000 manuscripts, 243,000 maps and 560,000 microfiches. Its buildings have recently been extended and there is also a North American Library.
