Opened at the end of 2008, the Zürich Zoological Gardens now has a new habitat: the African Mountains. The 6,300 square metre facility was inspired by northern Ethiopia’s Semien National Park, a natural mountain environment for Gelada or red-breasted baboons. In Zürich the baboons will share this habitat with Nubian ibex, dassies (rock rabbits) and blue-winged geese. The new area can be seen from the terrace of the Altes Klösterli restaurant and is rocky and hilly with broomsedge, bluestem, juniper bushes and tree heathers and with knipholia lilies and lobelias.
