The Zurich Zoological Garden, covering some 25 acres, opened in 1929; it is one of Europe’s best known zoos. Containing about 2,200 animals of 300 different species, it is easily reached from the city centre. There is an open-air aviary, an aquarium and a popular replica of a tropical rain forest. The daily penguin parade is another popular feature, which takes place when the temperature is below 10 ºC. Amongst the special enclosures are those for red pandas, otters, and snow leopards and there are houses for clouded leopards, tigers, Amur leopards and Indian lions. The zoo has picnic areas and restaurants.
