Pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela used to visit Rapperswil and crossed Lake Zurich on a hazardous wooden footbridge. The stone dam, built in the 19th century, provided safer access across the lake at its narrowest point. In April 2001, a new 840 metre long wooden footbridge was built, in the same place as the old one and connected Rapperswil with the bridge chapel (Heilighüsli) which was built in 1551. Walking across this new timber bridge is the closest you can get to walking on water and is a unique experience; there is an attractively located picnic spot on the Rapperswil bank.
