The Wocher-Panorama is part of the Kunstmuseum (see separate entry), but has been on display in its own circular building since 1961. It is believed to be the oldest preserved large scale panorama in the world; it measures 37 metres by 7.5 metres and depicts the city of Thun with the magnificent backdrop of the Bernese Alps. It was painted between 1809 and 1814 by the Swiss artist Marquard Wocher (1760-1830) and presents the city to the viewer, as it was seen by Johann Goethe (1749-1832) and Heinrich Kleist (1777-1811). There is also a permanent exhibition of the artist and his era.
