The town of Wimmis is located some 11 km south of Thun and its landmark is the white castle complex, which is visible for miles around. It is believed that the first fortification and church were built in the 9th century and, together with the natural barriers of the Niesen, Burgfluh and Simmenfluh, formed protection for the Simme Valley. The region was controlled by the powerful and belligerent Weissenburg family and the fortress was progressively enlarged to become a castle in the 17th century. It is approached by 155 steps and is today used as administrative offices and by the district court.
