The Wildkirchli Caves in the Alpstein massif are reached from Wasserauen, some 24 km southwest of St Gallen and 6.5 km south of Appenzell. The cable car from Wasserauen goes to the upper station on Ebenalp, from where the Wildkirchli Caves can be easily accessed by foot. Traces of Neanderthal habitation were discovered in 1940 by Emil Bächler (1868–1950) and even earlier remains of cave bears have been found in the three cave system. The caves were inhabited by hermits from 1658 to 1853 and include a cave chapel. There is also the Gasthaus Aescher, a scenic restaurant.
