The town of Wil, located about 29 km west of St Gallen, has a population of some 17,500 and was once the favourite summer residence of the Prince-Abbots of St Gallen. The beautiful old town was founded around 1200 by the Count of Toggenburg, and in 1984 was awarded the Wakker Prize for the development and preservation of its architectural heritage. It is centred on the Hofplatz (also known as the ‘Goldener Boden’), the 1795 Baronenhaus and the former Abbot’s palace (now the local museum). The 15th century parish church of St Nicholas and the church of St Peter are nearby.
