Weissenstein, at an altitude of 1,284 metres, is Solothurn’s home mountain and has the most superb views over the Swiss Mittelland and the Alps from the Säntis to Mont Blanc. It is accessible in summer by means of a narrow pass road or a number of attractive hiking trails. Alternatively, it can be reached by means of a chairlift from Oberdorf station, about 4 km northwest of Solothurn; the trip is some 2,369 metres and takes around 16 minutes. Among the many walks, the Planetenweg or Planet Trail leads from Weissenstein to the Grenchenberg, following a model of the solar system.
