Weggis has two monuments to famous people who visited and stayed in the town. Mark Twain (1835-1910), the celebrated American novelist, humorist, satirist, writer and lecturer (whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens) spent two months here in 1897. The monument stands under the oak tree where he usually sat. The other monument is to Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), the great Russian composer, pianist and conductor. He spent each summer with his family in the Villa Senar, their residence near Hertenstein in Weggis, from 1932 -1939. He wrote his third symphony and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini there.
