The Wassekirche was built in 1479, with its foundations alleged to be on the site where the patron saints of Zürich, Felix and Regula, were executed. During the Reformation, the church was regarded as a place of idolatry, the contents were sacked and it was secularised, becoming the first public library of Zürich in 1634. A statue of Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531), who led the city’s ecclesiastical reforms, stands outside, bible in one hand and sword in the other. The Wassekirche has stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti and both it and the adjacent Helmhaus, now used for exhibitions, were once on an island.
