The medieval town of Wangen an der Aare is located on the River Aare, some 12 km northeast of Solothurn; it has a population of around 2,000 and the town’s centre has been well preserved. The castle, built by the Kyburger dynasty in 1407, was restored in the 16th century and has baroque ceiling paintings; it still houses some departments of the regional administration. The Gemeindehaus adjacent to the clock tower has historic documents and ceramics. The covered bridge over the Aare dates from the 16th century and the early 19th century parish church has 14th and 15th century frescos.
