Vitznau is about 5.5 km southeast of Weggis and since 1998 it has been possible to visit the artillery fortress. Guided tours, of about 1.5 hours, take place May to October on Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 pm and November to April on the first Saturday in each month at 2 pm. The fortress was built inside the Rigi cliffs during World War II as part of the Gotthard defence system, with two 10.5 cm guns having a range between 17.5 km and 21.4 km depending on type of shell. You see the munitions depots, tunnels, the living quarters and much more.
