The memorial statue of Swiss humanist and scholar Joachim Vadian (1484-1551), who was born Joachim von Watt, stands on the corner of Marktplatz and Neugasse. Vadian became mayor of St Gallen in 1526 and led the conversion of the city to Protestantism. He also donated his large private library to the city and this formed the nucleus of the ‘Vadiana’ cantonal library named after him. The statue was erected in 1904 and was the work of Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling (1848-1919), who was also responsible for the William Tell Monument in Altdorf (1892).
