Located in the Blatterwiese, close to the Chinese garden (see separate entry), the Upright Cross sculpture is a 1959 work, created for a Zürich exhibition by the Brazilian, Mary Vieria. She was born in 1927 in São Paulo, moved to Switzerland in 1951, and died in Basel in 2001. Regarded as one of Brazil’s most important 20th century sculptors and a major figure in kinetic art, she is well known for her ‘Polyvolume’ works. The Upright Cross, hewn out of a granite slab, has been described as ‘a symbol with a decidedly urbane character that is both imposing and stunning’.
