Since 1895 the Tonhalle has been the home of the Tonhalle Orchestra, which was established in 1868. It was built in historicist style to the design of architects Ferdinand Fellner (1847-1916) and Hermann Gottlieb Helmer(1849-1919), who designed several theatres and palaces in Europe, including the Konzerthaus in Vienna. The elegant façade has a tympanum supported on six columns, the concert hall seats 1,435 and has very good acoustics and there is also a chamber music and recital hall seating over 600. The present chief conductor is David Zinman, who has held the post since 1995.
