The present Theater St Gallen was designed by the Swiss architect Claude Paillard and opened in 1968 with a performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio. It is a performing arts centre for opera, ballet and theatre and has two stages; the larger one provides for an audience of 742 and the studio caters for 100 persons. Considered the oldest professional theatre in Switzerland, the first performance was given in 1801 and a company was founded in 1805. The first theatre was designed by Johann Christoph Kunkler (1813-1898) and opened in 1857; it was used for 111 years before being demolished.
