The Grande Cariçaie, which stretches along the entire southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, is a protected area for approximately 1,000 plant and 10,000 animal species. The area is a member of the Emerald Reserves network of the Council of Europe. The Grande Cariçaie is also a "Wetland of International Importance" or Ramsar site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. With its 2,500 hectares of shallow zones, 700 hectares of marshland and 1,100 hectares of forest, the Grande Cariçaie constitutes the largest wetland complex in Switzerland.
