Born in Berne in 1929, Bernhard Luginbühl is one of Switzerland’s best known sculptors and a friend of fellow sculptor Jean Tinguely. ‘The Big Giraffe’ is one of Luginbühl’s typical modern sculptured figures, created in 1968-69 for an insurance company. The raised centre of gravity, organically flowing curves and geometric shapes are said to be characteristic of his work. In spite of a heavy and powerful appearance, the artist has managed to endow the sculpture with a feeling of grace. From 1976 onwards, Luginbühl became well known for his large wooden sculptures, which he sets on fire as an art event.
