St Gallen embroidery is famous throughout the world and the Textile Museum, which was set up in 1878 for the promotion of the industry, began to collect textiles as patterns. The collection is now internationally acknowledged and contains some 30,000 items, which are displayed in constantly changing exhibitions such as ‘Secrets – The Lure of Lingerie’. Exhibits include textiles found in Egyptian tombs, embroideries from the 14th century onwards, handmade lace from major European centres, needlework utensils, and ethnic and contemporary art textiles. There is also an extensive specialist library with many antique books.
