The attractive town of Teufen is located about 7 km south of St Gallen and has a population of some 6,000. Teufen became well known for weaving and the invention of a new loom by Johann Conrad around 1820, led to a boom in embroidery which peaked in the 1880s. The interesting local museum includes exhibits relating to the engineering Grubenmann family who built churches and wooden bridges in the 18th century. In 1937, the herbalist, nutritionist and naturopath, Alfred Vogel (1902-1996) set up a Naturopathic Clinic and bought the lovely property Hätchen, now a museum with a medicinal garden.
