Tarasp Castle is situated about 7 km southwest of Scuol and is an impressive national monument dominating the surrounding countryside from some 1505 metres (4,938 feet) above sea level; built around 1040, it is well worth a visit. Extensively altered in the 16th to 18th centuries, it was the seat of the Austrian governors until Graubünden joined the Swiss Confederation in 1803. Bought and restored by a German industrialist in the period 1907-1916, one of the features is the organ, built at this time in the former armoury and now restored. The summer concerts are well known.
