Located next to the main Zürich railway station, the Swiss National Museum contains the country’s most comprehensive collection of exhibits covering the history and culture of Switzerland. Inaugurated in 1898 and designed by Gustav Gull in historicist style, it has become one of the main sights of old Zürich. The items displayed cover all periods from pre-history to the 21st century, sections of particular interest include weapons, silver and gold and the largest collection of coins and medals in Switzerland. There are musical and scientific instruments, ceramics and glass, stained glass exhibits, textiles, costumes and much more.
