The Museum im Turmhof, about 11 km east of Stein am Rhein, since 1937 has been housed on three floors of the former property of Reichenau monastery. This 13th Century building was once the residence of the abbots. The museum covers the 6,000 year history of Steckborn and the area, from pile dwellings to the present; of particular importance are the exhibits relating to three famous Steckborn industries, kiln engineering, tin casting and handcrafted lace using the tatting technique. Amongst the many interesting items are archaeological finds, local ceramics and wrought-iron and wood-turned items from the 18th and 19th centuries.
