The Stadelhofen Station, an important Zürich junction, was rebuilt with a new third track between 1983 and 1990. The distinguished international Zürich-based architect Santiago Calatrava (b 1951) was required to incorporate the old Wülfke 1894 station building into his scheme; the result is an interesting architectural contrast. Calatrava’s projects include the Oriente Station in Lisbon (1998) and the Tenerife Opera House (2003). Instead of the more usual tunnel and open excavation, Calatrava elected to excavate the hillside for the new track and reinstate with a multilevel structure that restores the walkways and bank above. There are, in all, four levels of walkway.
