St Peter’s is the oldest church in Zurich, the first reference being in 857 when Charlemagne’s grandson, King Louis the German (806-876), made it a gift to two of his daughters. The church is located close to the ruins of the Roman fortress at the Lindenhof and in 1538 acquired the largest clock dial in Europe, 8.7 metres (29 feet) in diameter. The great preacher and writer J C Lavater (1741-1801), a friend of Goethe, was pastor here for 23 years and his gravestone can be seen in the church wall and a memorial to him in the church choir.
