St Oswald’s Church is regarded as one of the most significant late-Gothic church buildings in Switzerland. The foundation stone was laid in 1478 and, although originally a single nave church, it was extended to a three nave basilica in the mid-16th century. An outstanding feature is the main entrance, known as the ‘King’s Portal’, which depicts St Michael on the left killing the dragon and on the right, St Oswald fighting the pagan king Cadwalla. Other features are the 1866 mural of the ‘Last Judgement’ by Melchior Paul von Deschwanden, the 1484 choir stalls and the baroque Bossard organ.
