The hamlet of Flüeli Ranft, which has superb views, is located approximately 4.5 km southeast of Sarnen and close to Sachseln. Here you can visit the 1618 pilgrimage chapel of St Niklaus von Flüe (also known as Brother Klaus) and the 15th Century saint’s two-storey wooden house. St Nicholas (1417-1487), a soldier until the age of 37, is said to have fought with a sword in one hand and a rosary in the other. In 1467, following a vision, he became a hermit and received many visionary images. He was beatified in 1669 and in 1947 was canonized by Pope Pius XII.
