St Martin’s Church, first mentioned in 1146, is the oldest church in Rheinfelden and its magnificent baroque interior is regarded as one of the region’s treasures. A convent church from 1228 to 1870, it has been a catholic parish church since 1873. The interior was remodelled in baroque style in the late 18th century, but the work was not completed. It was not until the 19th century that artists were commissioned to match the walls and ceilings and complete the earlier work and there are still elements of the earlier gothic style remaining. The 1607 high altar is a notable feature.
