The St Martin’s Reformed Church in Basadingen, about 12 km southeast of Schaffhausen, was designed in Classicist style by Johann Nepomuk Keller and built during the period 1838-44 by Jean Ruch. It is distinguished by its three level tower and round choir. The entrance has a memorial plaque to Wolfgang Gräser, who was the inspiration for J S Bach’s invention of the fugue. Other interesting features include the 1743-45 ciborium by Franz Thaddäus Lang in the vestry, the altar painting of the crucifixion by Karl Georg Kaiser, the 1840-41 pulpit and the baptismal font in stucco marble.
