The two distinctive towers of the Sankt Laurentius Stadtkirche, which is located in the middle of the old town, are a Winterthur landmark. There was a church on this site as early as the 7th and 8th centuries and excavations have shown that beneath the present floor there are the foundations of six earlier churches. The present structure was built between 1501 and 1518, but the two 65 metre (213 feet) high towers were added in 1659 and 1794. Notable features internally are the 18th century baroque organ and the huge frescos by the Bernese painter Paul Zehnder (1884-1973).
