Apart from the Cathedral (see separate entry), the St Laurenzen Church, which dates back to the 15th century, is St Gallen’s most important church. It was renovated and extensively altered in the period 1850-1854 into a neo-gothic style basilica. In the 1520s, with the advent of the Reformation, the church became the Protestant centre of worship, emphasising the acute divide of faith in the city. Inside you will find attractive wall decoration, which is surprisingly almost contemporary in nature. There are superb views of the city from the top of the tower.
