Located on the south bank of the Rhine, on the outskirts of Diessenhofen about 10 km east of Schaffhausen, is the former Dominican convent St. Katharinental. It was closed in 1869 and converted into a senior citizens’ home and clinic by the Thurgau canton, but its church, which was built in 1732-35, is considered one of Switzerland’s most beautiful late baroque buildings. Highlights are the ceiling paintings, the superb altars and the organ c.1736 by Johann Jakob Bommer, which is decorated with angels playing music. There is also an important collection of music from the 18th and 19th centuries.
