The Protestant St John’s Church is situated in Vordergasse, diagonally across from Haus Zum Ritter (see separate entry); it is late Gothic in style and immediately noticeable for its imposing tower. There was a parish church sited here about 1000 AD. The overall width of the church at 34 metres is only exceeded by the cathedrals in Basle and Berne. The 1733 baroque stucco ceiling in the nave is by Johann Jakob Schärer (1667-1736) and another feature, the c.1500 ‘Kreuztragungsfresko’ near the organ, has the oldest known view of Schaffhausen in the background. The church is often used for concerts.
