Completed at the beginning of the 11th century, the former Benedictine abbey of St Georgen is one of Switzerland’s best preserved monasteries and now belongs to the Gottfried Keller Foundation. The most important areas for visitors are the late Gothic cloister and what is called the ‘Celebration Hall’. Erected by the last abbot, David von Winkelsheim, it contains important fresco paintings dating from around 1500. Other parts of the abbey, most of which can be visited, include the winter and summer refectories, a dormitory, the abbots’ parlours and chapel and the guest house. The chapter house may not be entered by laymen
