The Romanesque Castle Church of Spiez, located about 10 km south of Thun, is at the end of a rocky peninsula overlooking Lake Thun. It replaced an earlier Carolingian church on this site, which was referred to in 762. Whilst the present building dates from the 9th/10th centuries and the spire is from 1628, it is thought that the square tower is from the earlier church. Features include the Romanesque frescoes in the apse and the crypt, interesting altars and the stone pulpit. The church is popular for local weddings and the well tended gardens are delightful.
