The Segantini Museum was designed by architect Nicolaus Hartmann and opened in 1908 as a monument to the great Italian artist, Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899), who spent the last five years of his life in the Engadine. Segantini died whilst completing the central picture of his famous Alpine Triptych ‘Life - Nature - Death’ (‘La vita - la natura - la morte’), which is displayed under the cupola of the museum. The paintings exhibited show the development of his style and the remarkable luminosity for which he is renowned. Segantini and Ferdinand Hodler (1815-1918), are considered the outstanding painters of Swiss mountains.
