The gypsum industry was economically important to the region in the 18th and 19th centuries, when there was a great demand for Schleitheim gypsum. It was mined both on the surface and underground and mining continued until the 1940s. You can learn about both the mining methods used and subsequent treatment of the raw gypsum and can follow the footsteps of the early miners by going 150 metres underground where the temperature is a constant 10°C. The deposits are estimated to be up to 240 million years old. In case you were wondering, the tunnels are periodically inspected by mining experts!
