If you are visiting the Shadau Castle and the Wocher-Panorama (see separate entries), do not miss the nearby lovely St. Maria von Scherzligen Church. This is one of the two oldest churches in the Bernese Oberland and was first mentioned in documents around 762, when it was referred to as ‘Scartilinga’. The Carolingian tower is from the 9th century and the oldest parts of the Romanesque nave date back to the 10th century when the church was funded by Bertha of Burgundy. The rare murals and frescos are from the 13th to 16th centuries.
