The Schanzengraben is a canal that runs from the northern end of Lake Zürich to Löwenplatz, close to the main railway station. In 1798, when Zürich was occupied by the Austrians and the Russians, Schanzengraben (meaning literally ‘digging ditch’) was part of the city fortifications between Limmat and Sihl and used to defend the lake against the French army. Often referred to as ‘Venice in Zürich’, it is a peaceful and pleasant place for a stroll along the tree-lined embankment, with moored small boats, ending at the Usteri Bridge.
