The 19th century Schadau Castle, reminiscent of a French Loire chateau, stands on the south bank of the River Aare, at its point of entry to Lake Thun. Designed by Pierre-Charles Dusillon and built in Gothic Revival style, between 1846 and 1854, for the banker Denis de Rougement, it has belonged to the Thun City Council since 1925. It is home to the high class Arts Restaurant which has a Petit Bistro and a bar; it also houses the Swiss Gastronomy Museum (see separate entry). The attractive English-style park has breathtaking views and contains the Wocher-Panorama building (see separate entry).
