The town of Sarnen, located approximately 20 km south of Lucerne, is the capital of the Obwalden Canton and has a population of around 10,000. Whilst its principal attraction is the delightful Lake Sarnen, there are a number of additional attractions to those listed under separate entries. The Witches Tower dates from the 13th century and houses the White Book of Sarnen, containing documents related to the founding of the Swiss confederation. In contrast, and an example of modern architecture, the Central Benedictine College in Brünigstrasse was built between 1964 and 1966. The interesting Landenberg Schützenhaus marks the original centre of Sarnen.
