The Gallo-Roman Villa of Orbe-Boscéaz and its mosaics are the remains of an important period in the region’s history. Destroyed during the invasions, the villa’s stones were used for new buildings during the Middle Ages and nothing remains above ground. By pure chance, just a little way under ground, nine mosaics dating from 1st to the 3rd century AD were discovered. These mosaics are a mere part of the decorative floor covering of an extremely large Roman villa. All these mosaics are preserved on the spot in four areas. Together, they are unique in Switzerland.
