Rolle is an attractive town situated on Lac Leman between Nyon and Lausanne. It is home to a 13th Century castle (see separate entry). The streets are quaint, with many old burghers and vintners houses. Just offshore is the small island of Île de la Harpe, which is crowned with an obelisk commemorating General de la Harpe (1754-1838). The General played a major part in the war of independence from Berne in 1798. The island is now used by an active community of sailing enthusiasts, who regularly organize festivals and races around it.
