The alternatives to the cable car from Weggis up Mount Rigi (see separate entry) are the trains from Vitznau and Goldau to Rigi Kulm. The Viznau-Rigi railway was officially opened in 1871 and the Arth-Rigi service in 1873; electrification took place in 1937 on the Viznau line and in 1928. At weekends, from July to September, you can make a nostalgic trip in the restored old steam trains (consult the website for details). The old locomotives consume about 500 kg of coal and 2,200 litres of water puffing their way to the top.
