The greatest attraction in Schaffhausen is a visit to the spectacular Rheinfall, located about 3 km southwest of the town, the most famous waterfall in Europe. Likened by Goethe to the ‘source of the ocean’, it is the width at about 137 metres (450 feet) that is most impressive, rather than the height at 21 metres (69 feet). Of the many ways to experience this sight, the trip by boat, where passengers can appreciate the full force of the water, is most popular. There are also very good viewing platforms on both sides of the River Rhine.
