The Raumkonstruktionen (literally ‘Space Constructions’) is an example of the work of the well known American kinetic sculptor, Georges Rickey (1907-2002), and is located by the delightful Schanzengraben canal (see separate entry). Kinetic sculpture contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. Rickey combined his love of engineering and mechanics and was able to design sculptures whose parts moved in response to the slightest air currents. This sculpture, which dates from 1990, consists of two chromium steel plates, each size 6 metres by 1.5 metres, which turn silently into the optimum wind position.
