The Zürich Rathaus or Town hall, which juts out over the Limmat River, occupies a prominent position on Limmatquai. It is a building of character and is both elegant and well-proportioned, with elevations of classic Baroque architecture. Built between 1694 and 1698 on the site of an earlier parliamentary building, the construction was supervised by a councillor and master builder J H Holzhalb. It is well preserved and noted for its richly decorated panelled interiors and, in particular, for the intricate stucco ceiling in the Banquet Hall and the ceramic stove in the Council Chamber.
