The towns of Rapperswil and Jona were joined in 2003 and Rapperswil Castle, a medieval fortress, is an important architectural monument. Probably dating from the 13th century, it was built by the Count of Rapperswil on his return from the Crusades. Perched on top of a rocky hill, the castle dominates the old town and provides outstanding views. It is now owned by the municipality and was restored in 1988/89 and its triangular shape, keep and towers are notable features. Since 1870, the castle has housed the Polish National Museum (see separate entry) and the grounds are home to deer.
